10 Songs to My Cinematic Imagination
My job is seriously fun. I have the immense pleasure of curating events at Holocene, one of our town’s most diverse and dynamic venues. I’ve had this gig for 4 years now (my 4th anniversary there is aligned with Holocene’s 10 Year Anniversary, at the beginning of June)! Perhaps my favorite recurring series to host in the space is FIN DE CINEMA, a live film score series where local bands (from ambient experimental artists to sunny pop groups) compose and perform their own new soundtracks to classic / cult / art house films. “Fin de Cinema” (“end of cinema,” of course) comes from the endtitle of Jean-Luc Godard’s new wave film about the apocalypse entitled “Weekend.”
It’s a playful understanding of the way that we’re “tampering” with these films and the way they were “meant” to be shown - maybe when rock’n’roll infiltrates film, it’s the end of avant-garde cinema as “high art”….but maybe pulling these works off of their pedestals is a good and important thing. The hope or ambition is to breathe new life into the films and explore them in more open-ended ways, with live scores by-and-for young people with an ear for experimentation. It’s been one heck of a ride. Over these past years of Fin de Cinema, I received a cease and desist letter from Kenneth Anger, had flash mobs of gals show up dressed as mermaids or vampires, and have seen a wealth of entirely inventive sonic arrangements that have - for lack of a more precise term - blown my mind. Now I’ve picked out 10 of these events from the last 4 years and highlighted some of the participating artists, so that you can stroll down memory lane with me….
